The War is Over

Hiroo Inoda, a Japanese soldier who did not believe that World War II was over, finally surrendered in 1974. Another under his command died only two years earlier. Why? This order by his commander partly explains it:

You are absolutely forbidden to die by your own hand. It may take three years, it may take five, but whatever happens, we'll come back for you. Until then, so long as you have one soldier, you are to continue to lead him. You may have to live on coconuts. If that's the case, live on coconuts! Under no circumstances are you [to] give up your life voluntarily.

It is admirable to be committed to your position in the army and to your country, but there comes a time where you have to really think about what you are doing. You have to think for yourself. He isolated himself and gradually became what I call rationally insane. Over the course of 29 years, he lost his men, his family and his whole world. All because of fanaticism and war. Family members appealed to him to come out. Many of them were probably dead by the time he got back. And this is terribly sad. Perhaps I am more sensitive to that these days. I would link to that entry, but I haven't written it yet.

Fucking war, look at what it does. Is it any wonder that people want to put an end to it? We're just so sick of this shit. I know I am. 18 Canadian casualties in Afghanistan in March 2006. 2000 American dead in Iraq.

FUCK WAR.
