Strangled, dismembered then burned to a crisp on a grill

Holy. Fucking. Shit. It's that third part that really gets me. They still don't know how she was burned so completely on a grill. All because she started a new relationship.

Do these killers EVER think before doing anything?

Our parents and PDAs

In my entire life, I have seen my parents show affection to each other exactly once. It was Christmas Day evening about 18 years ago. In the living room, my father has a lazy boy type chair in which no one else may sit if he is in the room. He ALWAYS sits there, unless he is eating (there's a small table for eatin', in the corner). This one time he decided to sit on the long couch with my mother's head in his lap, and his arm on hers. I just stood and stared. And I have seen nothing like that since.

I don't believe that my parents should have ever been together. It's almost a shame they even met. I can't even bear to ask my mother why she made the choices she made. For several reasons, though, they stuck it out, although divorce was highly unlikely to have been on the table as an option, and not necessarily for moral reasons. I have asked several people if their parents ever showed affection to each other regularly, and only one of them has said yes. So I ask you, regardless of age or ethnicity: Did you ever see your parents (or the people that raised you) give light displays of affection, such as the odd little kiss, an affectionate arm squeeze or even sitting together on the sofa? Was it a normal thing to see? Remember, I am not talking about foreplay, or anything like that. Just the small stuff that might even last a half a second.

Something else to note: Not only have I never seen my parents give affection for one another except for that one time, but I have never seen any of my siblings do it, either, except when my sisters got married, and one of my brothers. And two of those occasions seemed a little bit forced.

Test the nation? O RLY?

Last night CBC's Test the Nation was on the air. It pitted teams of surgeons, millionaires, fitness instructors, mayors, radio DJs, tattoo artists and celebrities against each other. I returned home after a day of drinking and revelry, and Rose insisted that I take the test before watching the show. I did, and according to this test, I will probably be the smartest of any random sampling of 50 Canadians. Top 2% isn't bad. The show itself was fun (the hosts didn't seem to take anything all that seriously, which I liked) and I would like similar things to happen in the future. The CBC has a good thing going on here.

My biggest criticism here is that although the show claims to be pan-Canadian, it clearly excluded francophone Quebeckers. The questions were aimed at English audiences, and for language reasons alone most people living in Quebec are at a major disadvantage. Even if a person is bilingual, some of the expressions used are very anglo-centric. It's as commenter mathieu put it, another example of how Canada excludes or forgets about Quebec. This is simply unacceptable, and the rest of Canada really needs to understand this if there is to be any talk of really accepting Quebec into the Canadian family. (I may sound like a separatist here, but I am not.)

Take the test, just for fun, and show your score. I got a modest 130, and I suspect that the readers of this blog and the other Montreal blogs would score around that much. Post any comments about the test as well as your score here. I think that the next time they do this, they should add a French version as well as a new team: topic-oriented bloggers.

Business opportunities with Quebec separation

I'm not that creative. But I do know that whenever there's a major conflict history happens before our eyes, there's an opportunity for someone somewhere. I was thinking, "What are the business opportunities that would emerge with a YES vote on a referendum?"

I have no ideas right now. Why don't you give me some?

Pour qui voter au Québec?

If you want to know who to vote for in the upcoming Quebec elections, take this test.

Sadly, this test only exists in French, but it only matters to the people that live here anyway. If you don't live here, I guess it doesn't matter unless you want to understand the politics here a little better. A little.

So it seems that I am a Green Party supporter (45%), followed by PQ (42%), Québec Solidaire (25%), ADQ and the Liberals at 17%. I get the impression that if I were a separatist, I'd be a péquiste.

Wordpress. Bah!

Wordpress is really beginning to chap my hide. I don't use it, but everyone else does, and with the surge in popularity, it seems unable to deal with the load on its servers or something. Maybe Wordpress is just a fad.
